Labor & Delivery Tips

Binsi PrimaMama Original Birth Skirt

If you’re rounding your due date (or past it), you may be desperate to bring on the labor and meet your little baby boy or girl. Here are a few tips for jump starting labor!

Pregnancy is an exciting time to enjoy, but there are some great worries that come along with the territory. The thing is, you want to establish a good system for working through your pregnancy, learning all the necessary resources, and getting the information that you need to go through your pregnancy comfortably and with ease. With this article, you can develop such a system using very common and needed tips.

Labor

Put your birth plan in writing and share it with your doctor before you go into labor. Having your plan in writing helps you focus on the type of delivery you want and helps your doctor understand what you want. Even though unexpected events can result in changes, having your plan documented gives you peace of mind before going into labor.

When you are in the later stages of pregnancy, especially in your third trimester, try not to travel too much. Some women think that because their due date is a month away, they will not go into labor on the train or plane, only to find themselves delivering their child with no medical assistance.

One of the most important things you can do for yourself is to exercise. If you exercise early in your pregnancy and stay in shape as much as you can, you can reduce your risk of a miscarriage. In addition, exercise can work to minimize potential complications with labor.

Let yourself be pampered. Especially in the last few months you will probably be very uncomfortable. Check with your local massage parlors and day spas. Many of them will offer pregnancy massages that are designed for your needs. If you are past your due date some of them may actually be able to use pressure points to induce labor.

You should be enjoying your pregnancy from start to finish, and with these helpful tips, you can give yourself the relief you need, knowing just what to expect from beginning to end. You can use these tips to have a very comfortable and relaxing pregnancy in which you aren’t stressing, but enjoying your role in bringing a new life into the world.

Pregnancy Signs and Symptoms

Arm's Reach Bedside Co-sleeper Bassinet Sleigh Bed, Cherry

Every woman goes through it, especially if they are trying to have a baby – the early signs and symptoms of pregnancy! Are you just letting your mind play games or are you really, in fact, pregnant? Here are a few tell-tale signs and symptoms:

  • If you have a feeling where you just “know” you’re pregnant, you might have an instinct that you should look into. This is usually the case with 2nd or 3rd pregnancies. Women know their bodies and any changes could be a sign of pregnancy.
  • Nausea and even vomiting, referred to as “morning sickness” are common during the first trimester and are also common signs of pregnancy.
  • Fatigue is another symptom of pregnancy. The hormones and changes in your body really make you exhausted. If you feel less energetic or down right exhausted, you might need to consult with a doctor (or take a nap!)
  • Frequent urination – this symptom can be present from very early in pregnancy and is due to pressure on your bladder.
  • The area around your nipples becomes darker in color in early pregnancy.
  • Dizziness and feeling faint can be caused by lower blood pressure or low blood sugar levels.
  • Heartburn is fairly common and may be a problem throughout the nine months. It is caused by the uterus pushing against the stomach and raised hormone levels which can interfere with the digestive process.
  • Mood swings are very common from early pregnancy due to hormone fluctuations. You might feel suddenly sad or emotional for no reason; this is perfectly normal.

If you have witnessed any of the above symptoms, try a home pregnancy test or consult with your doctor. Who knows, it may be time to start preparing for your little bundle of joy!

The Benefits of Children and Sand

KidKraft Pirate Sandboat

Why should we encourage children to play in the sand?
Sand can be used in many ways. There is no right or wrong when it comes to this fun yet messy substance. Sand invites participation; it allows young children to create and test “hypotheses”; it improves the imagination beyond it’s limit; it gives children a soothing sensory experience; and it is one of the best known ways for kids to gain physical, cognitive, and social skills.

Because sand play is a never ending concept, your child can create the direction and path of his or her own play. This freedom then clears the way for the child to build developmental concepts.

Many kids possess an inner drive to create an understanding of their own world as they explore and interact with various materials and textiles. Through play and interaction, something as simple as sand can create skills that can’t be gained any other way.

Valentine’s Day Crafts: Sweetie Pots

Clayberry Cottage 4

Happy Valentine’s Day from Bellacroft! We found this fun activity from Parenting.com and it reminded us of the Hand Painted Flower Pots from Clayberry Cottage. The perfect gift for any special occasion!

Hand-painted clay pots and saucers filled with Valentine candy are a sweet treat for your child’s teacher, grandparent, friend, or even for mom! Create endless design combinations with just a few simple tools and techniques. (Source)

Age: 3 and up (This project is rated VERY EASY to do.)

What you need

  • Terra cotta clay pots in various sizes
  • acrylic paints: pinks, reds, purples, white
  • Valentine stickers
  • paint brushes, one small and one medium
  • new pencil
  • household sponge
  • acrylic sealer spray, matte finish
  • lace (optional)
  • raffia and/or ribbon (optional)

What you do

1. Paint clay pot in desired color and let dry. Apply a second coat, and if needed (especially with lighter colors), a third coat as well, allowing sufficient drying time in between coats. Paint inside and outside of pot.

2. Once painted, it’s time to decorate! Here are some ideas to make your pot look great:

* To give your pot a polka dot design, use the eraser of a new pencil and dip into desired paint color. Dab once to remove excess and dot onto pot. Each polka dot will need a new application of paint. For smaller dots, use the end of a paintbrush applying with the same method.

* A household sponge can be used to add a contrasting color. Wet the sponge and squeeze out all excess water. Dab into paint then dab off excess onto a piece of paper towel. Use a dabbing motion to sponge on a light coat of contrasting color.

* Stripes can be applied by simply loading a small paintbrush with paint and painting downward. Stripes do not need to be perfect, so don’t fret if you “go outside the lines” so to speak.

* Stickers can be used to decorate your pots. Stick over dry paint and press firmly to be sure they adhere.

* You can tie ribbon or raffia into a bow and glue to the front of your pot, or tie around the rim. Hot glue will work better than white glue for adhering ribbon or raffia to the front of the pot.

* Lace can also be used to accent your pot. Glue lace around the rim for a fancy finish.

3. Once decorated, apply a coat or two of acrylic sealer and allow to dry overnight.

4. Fill with various candy and enjoy your creations!

Helpful hints

Keep them busy during paint-drying time. Terra cotta pots require several coats of paint to cover, especially with light colors. Plan this project so that children can do other things while they are waiting for the different coats to dry. For classroom projects, plan this over several classes, or paint the pots with two coats of white ahead of time, then when children paint the pots with colors only one, or possibly two, coats will be needed.

Be careful with glue. Hot glue should be handled by adults or older children with supervision. Hot glue burns and hurts, so please use caution!

Save time by pre-making bows. Tie bows from raffia or ribbon ahead of time. Apply a drop or two of hot glue to the back center of the bow to keep it in place. Now your bows are ready.

Re-use your pencil. Acrylic paint can be easily wiped off of the pencil eraser while still wet. Pencil can still be used for its original purpose.
