Sleeping No-No’s for Moms

Parents of newborns or infants are generally desperate for some extra sleep. Unfortunately, with babies waking through the night and housework building up, sleep tends to fall at the end of the list during each day.

Mistake # 1: Leaving chores for the end of the day.

It seems like a great idea. Waiting until your kids are asleep to do the laundry and sweep the floors. Unfortunately, these types of activities will tend to leave you wired and unable to fall asleep. We recommend leaving only 1 or two chores for this time of day and the allotting some quiet time. Read a book, watch TV or do something relaxing before bed.

Mistake # 2: Waiting in your child’s room until he/she falls asleep.

Not only does this waste precious time that you have to do things or rest yourself, it teaches your child that he/she can’t fall asleep on their own. This also sets you up for frequent fits during the night as your child will awaken without you there. I suggest setting a bed time routine and stick with it. Mine goes as follows:

  • 7:00 – Bath Time
  • 7:30 – PJ’s and Brushing of Teeth
  • 7:45 – Story time
  • 8:00 – Lights Out

With a routine like this, your child will fall asleep like a PRO and be less dependent on somebody else to fall asleep. This schedule also allows you free time to relax while your child is falling sound asleep in his/her own room

Mistake # 3: Allowing your children to sleep in your bed.

There are several opinions when it comes to co-sleeping. As a matter of fact, the biggest fear of co-sleeping is the safety issue. Your child could easily fall out of bed or be hurt if you roll over. This is when a co-sleeper comes into play. This bed side bassinet can help your newborn to fall asleep while you get some much needed rest as well!

Creative Gift Ideas: Create Your Own Gift Basket!

Weddingstar Japanese Blossom Nut Free Gourmet Milk Chocolate Bar

If you’re looking for a great, yet inexpensive gift to give for a special occasion, consider making your own gift basket! Materials can be found at reasonable prices and a homemade gift is a gift that comes from the heart!

When creating gift basket, the first most important thing you should consider is the basket itself. This is the center (or base) of your gift so it should be perfect. It should be unique and should fit the items that you want to put inside easily. Gift baskets should have a “wow” factor that makes the recipient really feel excited.

If your gift basket has a certain theme or color scheme, try to find a container to match. A good example of this is a movie themed gift basket. Many dollar stores sell plastic popcorn containers that perfectly fit the theme. This basket can include Dvd’S (or gift certificates to the movie theater), popcorn, candy and any other items that are used during a movie night. This is a great gift for a friend that is recovering from an illness and needs a night of relaxation!

Another great basket idea is for somebody that loves cooking or gadgets. Your base can be as simple as a large mixing bowl, a shiny large colander or a color coordinated serving dish. With this theme the options are endless! Fruit, gadgets, cookbooks and other items can fill the basket and can be given during house warming parties or for any other special occasion where you have a cook fanatic!

Creating your own gift baskets for corporate events is not very difficult either if you can buy your items in bulk. These baskets can be filled with items that are frequently used in the work place (yet not very expensive) such as mini calendars, pens, calculators and even stress balls! Your co-workers will love these little items, especially if they are wrapped in a beautiful basket!

Making a gift basket is simple once you have your main theme. First, find the container/basket. Second, purchase the items that you want to fill it with. Third, think of a filler that will help your gifts stay put. Lastly, wrap it in cellophane and finish it off with a bow!

Baby Shower Etiquette

Cassiani

If you’re trying to track down some “baby shower etiquette” rules, good luck! These rules are constantly changing and being modified. We have learned one thing – if you like it, go with it! Having said that, here is our opinion on certain baby shower rules and regulations:

·Who should host the  baby shower? There are two answers to this: traditionally and most commonly. Traditionally, close friends hosted baby showers. It is, however, becoming more common to see family members hosting the event. These days, the rule is: If you want to throw a baby shower: Go ahead!

· Should fathers and men be invited to the shower? Baby showers used to be “women only”. These days, however, more and more baby showers are including men (or just the daddy-to-be). Our opinion? Whatever makes you happy!

· When should I hold the shower? Baby shower etiquette generally dictates that the shower should be held 1-2 months before the baby is due. This gives the parents enough time to go out and shop for important items that they did not receive at the shower. You do not want to hold the shower too close to the due date, in case the baby comes early. You may instead decide to hold a “welcoming” baby shower one to three weeks after the birth of the baby (just make sure that you give the guests enough notice! You obviously will not know when this sort of shower can be held until the baby is actually born). This sort of shower is great for parents who did not want to know in advance the sex of their baby… guests will know whether to bring gifts for a boy or a girl. It is also good to hold a “welcoming” baby shower so that family and friends who are coming into town for the birth of the baby can attend, as well.

· Is it ok to sign up for a baby registry? Old rules of etiquette would say that it is a definite no-no to tell your guests what to bring (besides assigning a certain theme). But baby gift registries are becoming more and more useful and more and more popular. Go ahead and sign up for a baby gift registry. You can include a note in the invitation that says where you are registered, but it looks best if you can get the word around by word of mouth. Be sure that the cost of items covers a wide range. You can also propose that guests chip in for one, larger item.

· Do I still need to send out Thank-Yous? You most definitely need to send out thank-you notes for all of your gifts. While you are opening them at your party, ask someone to be a scribe and write down everything that you get as you open it. A host may even choose to print out in advance a list of the addresses of all of the guests, then the gift that each person gave can be written right next to the name, making it easier for the mother to send out a proper thank you note. Also, another benefit to getting thank-you notes out early is that a mother will be much to busy once the baby is born. Also, a thank-you note and even a small token of thanks should be given to the host of the shower.

Birthday Party Advice: The Slumber Party

Kate Aspen Li'l Saver Favor Ceramic Mini Piggy Bank in Gift Box with Polka Dot Bow

Slumber Parties, AKA, Sleep overs, can be a huge fear for parents. Just a few or even a dozen extra children can be extremely over-whelming. Logically, however, slumber parties are a fun and inexpensive way to throw a really fun birthday party, if you do it correctly!

Sleepovers are more common for little girls, however, they can be done for boys too. Girls are just a little more tame (in my opinion – however there are some calm boys!)

If you’re going to host a sleepover, first, pick a date. Ask your child to pick a certain amount of children for this sleepover. Then you can plan the activities! If your sleepover is planned for girls only, plan a “spa” theme. Do nails, hair, makeup, movies and all sorts of fun activities. These will keep girls busy for hours!

If you are planning a sleepover for boys, just take a look at what your boys like to do! It can be a “sports” kind of evening, water gun fights, movie night – whatever they want to do! Just keep it structured to help keep YOUR night fun as well.

Pizza is usually the food option for sleepovers – quick and easy and usually loved by all. We recommend scattering pillows and blankets in the living room so the children can all collapse where they find to be the most comfortable. This is usually the place where you hear the most giggles – when the children are whispering and telling jokes before bed!

I believe being “with child” is a true gift from God, and no woman should try and hide it. I also know how hard it is to feel good about yourself when your body seems to never stop growing. The traditional “big maternity clothes” make women look even bigger. My maternity line is roomy, yet tapered. The clothes allow you to grow without making us look like tents. The line makes you look as sleek and slim as we possibly can. I am now pregnant with my second child. I love the clothes I’ve designed. I wear them everyday. I hope you love them too.

Getting in on the Baby Shower Pool

Fashioncraft Choice Crystal Pink pacifier Favors

The 2012 Baby Shower Trend: The Baby Shower Pool

If your friends and family are up for some fun competition, incorporate the baby shower pool into your upcoming baby shower. How does it work? Every person places a friendly wager on the birth time and weight of your baby (either/or). This is usually done around the time of the baby shower which means it can be incorporated.

Each person pays a friendly amount (usually $5 or $10) which is then put into a pot. The winner of the pool splits the pot with the baby! Generally, the parents put the baby’s winnings into a savings account or put it towards something that is needed for a newborn such as diapers.

If you incorporate this pool into your shower, you an set up a “pool station” which each person can write down their “bets”. This chart can be kept as a keepsake and can be decorated with stickers and put into a frame for memories. Don’t forget to make a copy for the winner!

These days, baby showers incorporate men and women – so keep this trend going by throwing a huge baby shower bash for the entire family to join in on!

Easter Ham Recipe:

What You’ll Need:
1 (6-lb) ham, shank or rump cut
1 cup (packed) light-brown sugar
1 Tbsp cornstarch
1/2 tsp salt
1 small can (about 8 oz) crushed pineapple with syrup
1 Tbsp lemon juice
1 Tbsp mustard
Whole cloves

1. Preheat oven to 325°F. Place the ham, fat side up, on a rack in a shallow roasting pan. Insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part (not near the bone), and set ham in pre-heated oven.
2. While the ham is roasting, prepare the glaze. In a small saucepan, mix the light-brown sugar, cornstarch, salt, pineapple, lemon juice, and mustard. Cook over medium heat until it boils and becomes thick; stir frequently.
3. A half hour before the ham is done, remove it from the oven and drain off any drippings. Remove any loose skin.
4. Score the fat surface diagonally in one direction and then the other to create diamonds. Insert cloves into the points; brush the surface with glaze.
5. Return the ham to the oven until the internal temperature is 160°F.
6. Allow the ham to rest 15 to 20 minutes before carving. Serve with your favorite sides, such as fresh asparagus and mashed potatoes.
